I have spastic diplegia, which affects my legs mostly. I have also been diagnosed with epilepsy, which causes little seizures, for which I have my assistance dog, Diesel, who was provided by SmartPups. My modes of learning are different to most kids as I have also been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and CVI, which makes hearing and seeing a little bit more difficult for me. That said, I am making a lots of progress, with a lot of help.

What I would really love, is to have my independence and be able to walk. As I was also born with a club foot, it makes things just that little bit more difficult for me. However, Dr Nuzzo in New Jersey, USA, has developed a pioneering treatment called SPML (Selective Percutaneous Myofascia Lengthening) that has worked wonders for some of my little friends here in Brisbane. They, like me, had difficulty walking however following the small operation in the US, they are able to walk unaided, run, kick a ball and even climb a tree. The things that most little boys like me take for granted and that I am dreaming to do.

SPML is a non-traditional, orthopedic tendon/muscle lengthening/release that is minimally invasive, with minimal scarring, mostly for children and adults with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy.

There are two pediatric orthopedic surgeons in the U.S., to my knowledge, who are regularly doing SPML. They are Dr. Roy Nuzzo, in Summit, NJ, who adapted the procedure initially used for cardiac patients, and Dr. David A. Yngve in Galveston, TX, who trained with Dr. Nuzzo. Dr Nuzzo has been performing SPML for well over 30 years, having performed over 500 cases. And after having met Dr Nuzzo, "Roy" as he likes to be called, in September 2017, we can say that he knows what he is talking about and is, in our opinion, an orthopaedic genius!

WILL YOU WALK WITH ME?
